At the Cornea Associates of Texas, specialists can use a laser to reshape your cornea and correct your vision. Completed in about twenty minutes, LASIK surgery has become one of the field's most popular options.
LASIK is a remarkable procedure. It involves using a laser to reshape the cornea to correct someone’s vision. So someone who is nearsighted or farsighted or has a stigmatism can now have that problem corrected with the laser. It involves preparing a flap of the cornea, so we will fold the cornea over and will do the laser on the internal portion of the cornea to remove tissue and then put the flap back to let it heal. By doing so, it changes the curvature or shape of the cornea, which is how we can correct someone’s vision. LASIK is a relatively painless procedure. There is very little discomfort and we use numbing eye drops to anesthetize the cornea for the procedure. The procedure itself is rather quick. It takes about 10 minutes per eye or 20 minutes total time and most of that is actually preparation for the procedure and allowing the cornea to stabilize after the procedure is finished. The actual laser portion of the procedure may take 20-30 seconds and the preparation of the flap may take another 20-30 seconds. So relatively speaking this is a rather quick procedure.
