New Device for Female Sterilization Approved The FDA has approved a new device, the Essure System, for female sterilization. The device is inserted into both fallopian tubes, where it causes scar tissue to form. The scar tissue blocks the tubes’ entryway. As a result, sperm are unable to reach the egg and fertilize it. The device is advantageous because it does not require any incisions. Patients need to use an alternate method of birth control for three months while the scar tissue is forming.
